🏌🏽 Sports bars are evolving

The Hustle

A robot named Ai-Da spoke to Britain’s Parliament about tech’s role in creative industries… until she fell asleep and had to be reset.

In today’s email:

  • Topgolf and the sports bar of the future.
  • Chart: #BookTok’s queen.
  • Weekend Reads to pair with some milk beer.
  • Around the Web: Old maps, a bowl of cats, how to network like a croissant, and more cool internet finds.

🎧 On the go? Listen to today’s 10-minute podcast to hear Juliet and Zack discuss sports bars for millennials, a bizarre eBay case, Google’s futuristic video booths, and more.

The big idea

Zachary Crockett

The new sports bar, explained

In the past, sports bars were a place for fans to watch their team and celebrate or commiserate over “one too many” beers.

Led by Topgolf (now owned by Callaway Golf), a new type of sports bar is emerging — one where visitors don’t watch, but actively play, and drink if they feel like it.

… made golf fun for the masses with driving range games that anyone can enjoy. Guests can order drinks and food as they play, making it a prime spot for group outings. Now, the format is coming to other games:

  • Puttshack, launched by the Topgolf team, is an indoor mini golf venture that just raised $150m to expand to new markets.
  • Toca Social offers an indoor soccer experience alongside a bar and restaurant, and just opened its first US location in Dallas.
  • Chicken N Pickle is an indoor/outdoor pickleball facility with locations across the midwest that include a bar and full-service restaurant.

The concept of games at bars is nothing new — dart boards and pool tables have been staples of sports bars for decades. The difference is that these concepts prioritize the game first, and drinks second.

There are a couple reasons for this

Millennials have been nicknamed the “Experience Generation,” and are likely more attracted to the idea of doing an activity rather than just grabbing drinks.

Secondly, millennials and Gen Z are reportedly drinking less than previous generations, making a bar that solely serves booze less appealing.

The simpler reason? Smacking a golf ball (or throwing an ax) is pretty damn fun after a couple drinks.

TikTok’s queen of the bestseller list

On the NYT’s paperback fiction bestseller list, one name rules them all: Colleen Hoover.

With 8.6m print sales this year, Hoover is outselling the Bible, per The New York Times, and her readers are arguably more devout than the Old Testament’s.

Hoover’s story starts in Texas…

… where she began writing to pass the time at her son’s play rehearsals. She shared her work with her boss who loved it so much that she picked up Hoover’s shifts to give her more time to write.

Hoover is a unicorn in the publishing world for several reasons:

  • She defies genre, dabbling in romance, thrillers, and ghost stories, and doesn’t have a massive brand like Harry Potter or Fifty Shades.
  • Her success is largely due to her fans, nicknamed CoHorts, who post enthusiastic reviews on TikTok, where the #colleenhoover hashtag has 2.4B+ views.

One publishing exec called the dynamic “the reverse of the Oprah book club,” since hundreds of fans are making the recommendations rather than just one person.

For her part, Hoover has remained true to herself, living on the same plot of land she grew up on, and regularly shopping at Walmart in her pajamas.
