The big idea
Tupperware party

Zachary Crockett

Can you have Tupperware without parties?

Tupperware, once only available at parties, is now at Target — which is arguably less fun and doesn’t include homemade canapés.

Tupperware CEO Miguel Fernandez recently wrote in a LinkedIn post that the food storage brand is trying to reinvent itself for a new generation of consumers unfamiliar with direct sales.

Chemist and Tupperware founder…

Earl Tupper patented his double-sealed plastic lid in 1947, per Smithsonian, but it was advice columnist Brownie Wise who pioneered the Tupperware party.

Because most households hadn’t used plastic containers, Wise started a successful business recruiting women to host parties where they’d demo and sell products on commission.

  • Tupper hired Wise as VP of marketing in 1951.
  • By 1954, 20k people were involved in its direct sales network.

Their partnership didn’t last — in 1958, Tupper ousted Wise and sold the company for $16m — but Wise’s parties did. In 2019, there were 3m+ sellers worldwide.

Tupperware has tried and failed…

… to move into traditional retail. A 2003 Target partnership resulted in a decline in both sellers and sales.

Then-CEO Rick Goings said it would take two years to recover, and vowed to never do another “major deal with a retailer.”

But could it work this time?

It likely depends on where people prefer to buy their Tupperware.

There’s been backlash against direct sales and the many MLMs that have since borrowed Wise’s tactics, but Tupperware remains popular.

In 2020, amid the pandemic, sales jumped 72% in the US and Canada thanks to virtual parties and a home-cooking boom, per Modern Retail.

And now, a man who is very excited to tour the Tupperware Museum.

Liquid Death

Liquid Death is killing it

It’s a business idea so silly you might just laugh at it: canned water with punk-rock branding. Oh yeah, and it’s called Liquid Death.

But that silly little brand is laughing all the way to the bank:

  • Three years after launch, the company just raised $70m at a valuation of $700m.

CEO Mike Cessario…

… attributes part of its success to the cans looking “fun and unhealthy like a beer or an energy drink,” per Bloomberg.

With the new funding, the brand plans to expand into new beverage categories, so it’s probably only a matter of time before we see Liquid Death seltzer. Or, perhaps more aptly — Bubbly Death.

For more on the brand, check out our 2020 interview with Cessario here.

WFH Win
working from home

WFH is a game changer for disabled workers

While the remote work debate rages on, one implication of normalizing WFH is hard to argue with: it makes work much easier for many people with disabilities.

The group, representing 42.5m Americans, reached a 37.6% labor-force participation rate in August, approaching a  record from 2008, per Bloomberg.

Commuting…

… can be a deal breaker for workers with disabilities, preventing many from joining the workforce. Some other benefits of remote work include:

  • Mobility, since not all offices are designed to accommodate workers with disabilities.
  • Privacy, allowing workers to attend to bodily needs during the workday.

One worker said interviewing over Zoom can also help avoid biases from potential employers noticing her wheelchair.

The trend is poised to continue

With many firms struggling to fill open positions, workers with disabilities are being viewed as an untapped talent pool.

  • Thomas Foley who leads the National Disability Institute said he’s seen rising interest in his organization’s employment services.

Further, the mainstream adoption of remote work could lead more companies to offer remote work as an option for workers with disabilities, even if other workers still need to show up in person.
