The big idea
Halloween decorations

The $10B business of Halloween decorations

If you’ve noticed more monsters, spiderwebs, or skeletons in your neighborhood this year — you’re not alone.

A combination of factors has pushed the Halloween spirit to record levels, and big-box retailers are reaping the benefits, per Retail Dive.

Halloween decorations…

… became a thing in the early 1900s, when the holiday revolved around adults who hosted parties. In the 1930s, the focus shifted to kids, leading manufacturers to make more family-friendly decorations.

Almost a century later, these decorations make up an increasingly large portion of retailers’ fall inventory:

  • Home Depot’s Halloween and fall inventory is up to 861 products from 418 last year.
  • Walmart is carrying 3.3k+ fall and Halloween products this year.
  • Target’s assortment includes 197 Halloween products.

Mark Ledenbach, who wrote a book on Halloween collectibles, calls Halloween the “gateway to the holidays.” It gives retailers a reliable way to drive traffic to stores between spring and the holiday season.

And people plan to spend

One survey found 87% of consumers plan to spend on Halloween this year, with ~40% expecting to buy outdoor decorations.

Big-box retailers are fueling neighborly competition and pushing consumers to blow their budgets on over-the-top options, including:

  • Home Depot’s $299 12-foot skeleton with LCD eyes.
  • Lowe’s $348 12-foot mummy with lights and sound effects.

While a looming recession would seem to taper Halloween spending, retailers say demand is strong.

Plus, a 12-foot monster in your driveway is a great distraction from the monster in your brokerage account. That is, unless someone yanks it from your lawn, tosses it in their trunk, and drives off.

MrBeast’s raising money to go beast mode

The YouTube star known for his spectacle-filled segments is reportedly raising money to expand deeper into food and merchandise.

MrBeast’s brand is raising $150m at a ~$1.5B valuation, per Axios. Previously, Forbes estimated that MrBeast makes $54m a year.

Aside from ad dollars brought in from massive followings across content platforms, MrBeast has launched lucrative consumer brands, including:

  • MrBeast Burger, which now delivers to 1k+ areas in the US, Canada, and the UK. It recently launched its first physical location in New Jersey — which was mayhem.
  • Feastables, a snack brand that launched in January. It’s on track to bring in “tens of millions” this year.

Other YouTube stars are following suit, like David Dobrik, whose Doughbrik’s Pizza chain is set to open in November. Notably, they will have circular boxes.

Should the NBA go all-in on streaming?

The NBA is arguably more popular than ever, with viewership up 19% last season.

With TV rights up for renewal in 2025, the league faces a big question: How deep should it go into streaming?

The NBA last struck a deal…

… with Turner Sports and ESPN in 2016 worth $24B. For the next one, the league is reportedly seeking $75B, per Front Office Sports.

But cable ain’t what it used to be:

  • US households paying for cable are down ~30% in the last decade.
  • Hoops fans have shown an appetite for streaming, with League Pass subscribers up 30% YoY.

The trend raises the question: Does it make sense to double down on cable with cord cutting on the rise?

Complicating matters further…

… Sports consumption has major generational differences:

  • 53% of Gen Zers consider themselves sports fans, compared to 63% of all adults and 69% of millennials.
  • Among Gen Zers, 39% say they never watch live sports, compared to 28% of all adults and 20% of millennials.

While streaming is more popular with younger audiences, watching sports is clearly more popular with older ones.

Our guess? The NBA will land somewhere in the middle, like the NFL and MLB. They struck deals with streamers for select games but still air many on cable.
