Weed rolls into the metaverse

Brands have high hopes for the space.

Everyone from Nike to Gucci to JP Morgan — even UPS — is setting up shop in the metaverse.

Weed rolls into the metaverse

Now weed has high hopes for the space, according to The Wall Street Journal.

What’s happening?

Companies are preparing for a future in which US regulations allow for the direct sale of marijuana on metaverse platforms.

Until then, brands are getting creative with the tech:

  • Higher Life CBD Dispensary opened a virtual brick-and-mortar storefront in Voxels that sees ~1k visitors daily. A virtual cash register links out to its actual website for purchases.
  • Another company, Kandy Girl, has sold $30k in weed-themed virtual wearables, including marijuana-leaf wings for avatars.

But there are hurdles

For starters, the scale isn’t there yet. Globally, 11.2m VR headsets were shipped in 2021. Many users are likely children.

Regulation also varies. Meta’s Horizon Worlds, Roblox, and Sandbox are strictly against even linking out to marijuana sites.

BTW: We recently wrote about another metaverse use case — VR comedy.
