Launched in 2015 by two friends who had previously worked at Warby Parker, AllSaints, and Casper, Away may be the first luggage company that’s been described as “cool.”
The pair has done an excellent job at getting the cool kids table (Jessica Alba, Karlie Kloss, and more) to share their love for Away on Insta, to the tune of an astonishing $50m+ in revenue since launching.
So yeah…a lot of people are loving their new luggage.
First, the branding is great. Most luggage is boring; Away’s branding is loveable. It’s cliche to say, but they are the Warby Parker of suitcases. We like that. For example, they have a cool monogram feature as well as a partnership with Minions.
But, more than anything, the reason why we like Away luggage is because it’s hassle-free and works wonderfully. The wheels flow nicely, it’s sturdy, and fits more than a week’s worth of clothes. Plus, the suitcase has a charger and ships fast.
There’s a lot out there. Away isn’t fanciest. It’s sleek, but doesn’t have too many frills.
So, if you want something with more perks, the Briggs & Riley Baseline Carry On will get the job done. Unlike Away’s carry on, it expands, holds suits, and you can easily buy replaceable parts for it. But the cost is nearly 2x, so you certainly get what you pay for.
If you want something cheaper, go with the Travelpro Platinum. It’s not as attractive as Away, but it’s a fine rolling box to carry clothes.
