You go to the grocery store to grab some chips and you see a ton of options. You scan the shelves and narrow your decision to Cheetos, Lays, or Doritos. You begin to wonder, which brand is better? Turns out it doesn’t matter which one you choose because they’re all owned by the same company, PepsiCo.
PepsiCo is one of the many big corporations or “conglomerates” that own several brands in a similar space. Like how Coca-Cola owns Coke, Sprite, Minute Maid, Fanta, and Dasani. And these corporations don’t just control what we consume, they secretly influence almost everything we do. They’re hidden in plain sight, disguised as different brands to mislead the consumer (aka you).
Here are some of the major conglomerates who control how we eat, drink, watch, read, manage money, date, and drive.
Food & drink
Almost every product we consume is owned by the same 10 corporations: Kraft, Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, General Mills, Kellogg’s, Mars, Unilever, Johnson & Johnson, P&G, and Nestlé.
90% of the media is controlled by 6 conglomerates: GE, News-Corp, Walt Disney, Viacom, Time Warner, and CBS.
54% of America’s total financial assets are held by 10 financial institutions including: Citigroup, JP Morgan Chase, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo.
IAC is the world’s leader in dating sites with 45 brands including Tinder, OKCupid, and Match.com.
14 car companies own a combined 55 brands.
Remember this next time you’re deciding on a purchase. Turns out you might not have as much choice as you think you do.
