Sometimes we get a little too focused on startups, and forget that big companies like Nokia have been around for 100+ years, have billions of dollars in cash ($6.5B, to be exact) and a gigantic workforce.
Those types of numbers make some of our favorite unicorn darlings look like miniature ponies.
People think of Nokia as a Ja Rule-era phone manufacturer, but they have their hands in way more cookie jars than most realize.
In fact, if you’re reading this on a phone there’s a chance you received this data through a Nokia cell tower:
Always there when you call
And, if you’ve ridden in a train, plane, or driven on a highway… there’s a huge chance your trip was assisted by Nokia.
Point is, Nokia is still thriving in a of different industries. This is one of those companies we didn’t expect to be doing so well, but is totally killing it in enterprise and nation-scale projects.
The next step for Nokia (and why people expect them to grow a ton) is the rollout of 5G networks across the world, in which they are a current leader. 5G networks are capable of giving people 500Mbps speeds vs 50 Mbps on 4G networks (we did the math: That’s a big jump).
So, while lots of people don’t think of Nokia as a big company anymore, they are still one of the top companies in the world, doing cool stuff, and growing like level 50 on Snake.
Pro’s:
Since Nokia is so dang large, they are ALWAYS hiring. There are 100+ job openings at Nokia in San Francisco alone and over 1,500 worldwide.
They also have offices all over the world, which may be appealing to all you globetrotters out there.
Con’s:
Nokia is a large, publicly traded company with over 100k employees, so this is still a corporate gig. If you’re into scrappy startups that are super fun, goofy, and burn the midnight oil, this might not be for you.
Who’s it for:
Someone looking for a recognizable company with lots of stability, structure, and global footprint.
Elevator pitch to your aunt:
“Hey Aunt Joyce! I work at Nokia now, remember you used to have one of those old phones? Well, they also make cell towers and a lot of the equipment that lets your current phone work. They also make nationwide networks of high monitoring equipment, airplane communications equipment, and even the equipment that keep trains running on time.”
