The problem isn’t finding the right job, it’s finding the right company

Not sure we even have to explain this one, but Tesla is a company that makes all-electric cars.

They started this when electric cars were kind of a joke, but then Tesla came out with several cars that flat out outperformed all gasoline competitors on the market and showed that electric cars were not only viable, but BETTER in many ways.

There hasn’t really been a groundbreaking new car company in the United States since Ford (and that was started 114 years ago). However, Tesla seems to have pulled it off with 4 exciting and successful product lines (Roadster, Model S, Model X, and the new Model 3).

But cars are just the first step. Tesla’s also rolled out some massive changes in solar manufacturing technology and battery tech, which allows them to make solar roofs that are better all around than traditional roofing.

Oh yeah, and also trucks. They just released a partially autonomous semi-truck for the freight industry (with a ton of pre-orders from customers like Wal-Mart, Pepsi, FedEx and more).

The name recognition of Tesla is through the solar roof, and the “cool factor” is there, too. Tesla is also an insanely fast growing company, and also fast moving, meaning working there wouldn’t be boring.

Tesla is a hotbed of smart people who have a mission to change (or save) the world, so it’s an idealistic work environment.

Generally, hot companies like this also produce a lot of entrepreneurs who end up leaving the company to start their own companies. This means there’s also a lot of possible “Entrepreneur Serendipity” that could be going down inside Tesla.

Many analysts also believe Tesla has a shot at becoming one of the largest companies (not just CAR company) on Earth in the near future. Kind of like how Apple introduced the iPhone in 2007, and about 3 years later were the most profitable sellers of phones in the world.

Now, let’s talk about the downsides of an insanely ambitious company: Work/Life Balance is not a thing. They are looking for people dead-set on a mission to transition the world to sustainable electric energy, and this takes a hullvalotta work.

We’ve got insight into what it’s like to work there and it’s grueling. The deadlines and ambitions are sky-high, and they must be met with highly-regulated quality control (AKA, lives are at stake).

People that work there love “feeling part of something bigger”, but are sometimes not keen on CEO Elon Musk promising deadlines that seem flat-out impossible. They then have to finish projects in days that would take other companies months.

Who’s it for:

An ambitious person who wants to change the world’s energy usage structure, likes to work really hard, and wants to be part of a “movement” towards sustainable energy.

Elevator pitch to your aunt:

“Hey Auntie Anne! I work for Tesla, you know that car company that makes all-electric cars? Well, we’re reducing carbon emissions with 4 lines of cars: small sports cars, sedans, SUV’s, and now compact cars.

These electric cars barely have any moving parts, so there’s less maintenance, they are usually far faster than gas-powered competitors, and they can be charged up for cheap or free in most places, including your own garage.”
