For the past decade, Danny Gerardi has rented out his 7 bedroom, Mediterranean-style mansion as a filming location for “Keeping Up With The Kardashians.” His rate: as much as $36k per day.
Geraldi is one of many people taking advantage of the lucrative world of Hollywood location rentals — a business where private homeowners can rake in serious dough if their properties fit film and TV producers’ needs.
As LA real estate blog, The Real Deal, reports, homeowners can register with location scouting agencies — middlemen who help Hollywood producers find places to shoot that fit the world of the particular film or episode of TV.
Once they match a homeowner with a production company, rates run anywhere from $2k (for a commercial) to $30k+ (tor a TV show or film). The location company generally pockets 30% and the owner 70%.
TV episodes take 3-5 days to shoot, and films can take weeks. During that time, hundreds of crew members are filtering in and out of your house, repainting walls, shuffling around furniture, and crashing helicopters through your windows.
But in the end, it’s usually worth it: the owner of the house featured in the 2016 film, Masterminds, was paid $100k for the inconvenience. And more importantly, he got to watch Zach Galifianakis frolick through his foyer.
