Finding the best toothpaste to give you that movie-star smile can be tougher than you might think. After all, there are dozens – sometimes hundreds of choices – and what is the difference between Pro Clean Fresh and Dentist Clean Fresh?  Still, picking the right toothpaste is incredibly important – nearly everyone brushes their teeth as soon as they wake up in the morning and again at night. So whether you’re looking for toothpaste that whitens teeth, eliminates bad breath, or simply improves your dental hygiene, here are five toothpastes sure to put a smile on your face.

Our Favorite Pearly White Protectors

1. Native Toothpaste

Native Toothpaste was recommended to us by a dentist, and of all the pastes we tried – it was our favorite! It was great at combating bad breath and plaque and left our mouth feeling clean and refreshed. More importantly, it did a great job removing surface stains on our teeth, especially from all the Blue Bottle Coffee we tend to enjoy.

Finally, we love the ingredients in the toothpaste, including real wintergreen oil and real peppermint oil, which give it that fresh flavor. Native doesn’t contain any of those fake sweeteners or sugars like other toothpaste, and doesn’t have any other nasty ingredients, like SLS, propylene glycol, or triclosan.

We’ve tried both the Mint and Charcoal version. If you’re okay brushing your teeth and having them look black for an instant before rinsing your mouth, we’d recommend you go the charcoal route!

2. Desert Essence Toothpaste

Desert Essence Toothpaste combats harmful bacteria and plaque using a combination of tea tree oil and neem extract. Neem is a natural oil that is harvested from the neem tree and has been used for over two millennia for its medicinal properties. In fact, researchers have suggested that brushing with twigs from the neem tree is as effective as brushing with a toothbrush!

We love Desert Essence – it has a great flavor, is made from amazing ingredients, and helps keep your mouth healthy.

3. JASON Natural Cosmetics Powersmile Toothpaste

JASON toothpaste contains natural whiteners to whiten teeth without harsh chemicals or nasty ingredients. In addition, the paste gets great reviews for flavor and minty taste. However, it is a bit harsh and abrasive when used, and not a great fit for sensitive teeth and so we ranked it third on our list.

4. Nature’s Gate Natural Toothpaste.

Nature’s Gate Toothpaste was the mintiest of all the ones we tasted, and we really enjoyed the flavor and grittiness. It left our mouths feeling clean and refreshed, and it did so using ingredients that were certified vegan. However, the toothpaste simply doesn’t roll out of the tube and onto your toothbrush well – it constantly runs off the tube and into your sink – and so we ranked it fourth on our list.

5.  Dr. Bronner’s Toothpaste

We’re big fans of Dr. Bronner’s Soap – it leaves us with that clean, tingly fresh feeling in the shower. The toothpaste is free of artificial sweeteners, colors, and preservatives. In fact, 70% of the ingredients used are organic and the toothpaste is certified vegan and cruelty-free.  However, Dr. Bronner’s doesn’t foam well – it seems to dissolve instantly in your mouth. In addition, the taste reminds me that Dr. Bronners is best known for its soap, and there is a reason for that.
