- Every day, this Antarctica volcano rains $6k worth of gold. About 80 grams of it, to be exact. Mount Erebus, Earth’s southernmost active volcano, which contains a lava lake that’s been bubbling since at least the ‘70s, spews a daily seismic fury of volcanic rocks, steam, and gas — the last of which produces tiny particles of crystalized gold that’ve been traced as far as 621 miles away from the hotspot. Pretty shiny for a mountain named after the personification of darkness.
- In Milan, when the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, we hope you don’t start craving it — because it may soon ban late-night pizza. To reduce noise disturbances in residential areas, the city of Milan is proposing a ban on takeout foods after 12:30am on weekdays and 1:30am on weekends during tourist season. But can la dolce vita really exist without gelato after midnight? Critics, who say the ban goes against Italian culture, think not. Marco Barbieri, who represents the Italian retailers’ association Confcommerico, told CNN: “We hope they remove gelato, water and pizza from the list.” Same.
- A Golden Retriever in Florida, unbecoming of its name but appropriate for its home state, gave birth to a Key-lime green puppy. The pup, named Shamrock, went viral on TikTok for her odd coloring, which is apparently not a genetic mutation but the result of her fur being stained by biliverdin, a green bile found in female dogs’ placenta. Shamrock’s coat will return to a normal blonde color in a few weeks time, according to Carole DeBruler, the owner of Golden Treasures Kennel who posted the video. While rare, the phenomenon isn’t unheard of: In 2022, a bulldog was born a similar shade of green.
